blown out lights

My mother came in my room at night.

She woke because she could hear the church bells toll.

She told me that she had had a fright.

I woke into a city of lost souls

The light of the sunshine state had blackened overnight

as seventeen early bright baby stars were shot and pierced, left to die.

Seventeen soft burning lights

blown out, all too soon, by one jury, one judge, and one executioner

blown out, all too soon, by one man, one man’s spite.

How can Washington watch so blindly, as the ashes coil higher and higher?

what is a second amendment,if there will be nobody left, nobody left to read or amend it?

Does protecting your guns mean more than the lives of our nation’s very own sons?

If so, when you go to sleep at night just remember:

Seventeen mothers have been deprived of the lights for their embers.
